BigFace Burns – A Brief but Spectacular Life

It was a stunning evening sky, a clear blue licked with a tinge of pink from the setting sun. BigFace beamed at the crowd from it’s ‘stairway to the stars’ pyre designed by Tanja pyrotechnician and artist, Chris Polglaze.

It was well after dusk by the time the torch was applied to BigFace.  The head blazed brightly with a wicked grin.  After a spectacular but brief 8 minutes, only the frame remained.  Flaming head1Flaming head3

BigFace under construction at Tulgeen Riverside Nursery in Taronga Crescent

BigFace will be smiling at the community as the centrepiece of the Festival of the Face community bonfire at the Old Bega Racecourse.

BigFace has been created by staff and supported employees from Tulgeen’s Riverside Nursery.  The workshops to create BigFace were also open to the public over the past three weeks.

‘We are expecting BigFace to delight children and adults alike at the bonfire.  We hope that this is the first of many BigFaces that the Riverside Nursery is able to provide to successive Festivals, with increasing community involvement in future years” said Derek Povel who is the creative force behind BigFace and the Retail Maanger at Riverside Nursery.

Please join us at the Old Bega Racecourse for this community event to celebrate the conclusion of the Bega Festival of the Face.  From 3pm on Saturday, 28 June for food stalls, music and entertainment.  Bonfire at dusk.

Gold coin donation entry to the Festival organisers.    See Bega District’s News coverage here.

FROM BARE ROOT TO HARVEST BOUNTY – Transform your garden with bare root trees

Would you like to transform bare root trees to blossoms

bareroot trees   blossoms and fruit

to harvest bounty?

Riverside Nursery has a comprehensive range of deciduous trees in stock right now.

These trees are bare rooted meaning they have been grown in the ground and have been dug up ready for sale in the winter. We have  carefully replant the trees in potting mix in mass beds in the nursery ready for you to select from. When you make your choice, the trees are packed in wet shredded paper in plastic bags to keep the roots moist for your transportation home to plant.

If you are planning an orchard, now is the time to get the best range and price for deciduous trees, plus we also have bare rooted everything from strawberries to asparagus to rhubarb.

Riverside also has a great range of deciduous ornamentals from birches to crab apples or flowering pears to plums and much much more.

Please see our full range of bare root stock here.  Bareroot pricelist 2014

WACKY FACES- Small Sculptures from Tulgeen’s Craft Programme

Festival of the Face Events at Tulgeen

The Riverside Nursery at Taronga Crescent will be the focal point for Tulgeen’s contribution to the Bega Festival of the Face.  The garden centre provides an energetic and colourful backdrop for a week long feature exhibition ‘Head on a Stick’ commencing on 14 June 2014.

Tulgeen’s clients will produce sculptural heads and/or masks which are mounted on sticks in a feature backdrop, especially constructed for the Festival.  Additionally, works of art from Tulgeen’s eminently collectable artists from Art in the Garage will be on exhibition and for sale.  Small sculptures with interesting faces from Tulgeen’s Training and Education Craft program will be on view throughout the garden.

THE GIANT FACE – progressive community event

Tulgeen will be producing the centrepiece for the community bonfire at the culmination of the Festival.  A large face will be produced for burning at the bonfire.  This will provide a spectacular effigy with glowing eyes.  The face will be in construction at the Riverside nursery from the commencement of the Festival. Members of the public are invited to join Tulgeen staff and clients in its construction at a series of family events.
The first of these building sessions will be on Thursday, 12 June from 2-4.30pm. We look forward to seeing you there!!
