Tulgeen Board appoints Acting Chief Executive Officer

Jen Jen Russell is Acting Chief Executive Officer until the end of 2016

The Tulgeen Board today announced the appointment of  Jen Russell to the Acting CEO position whilst they undertake processes to fill the role.  In her substantive role as Client Services General Manager, Jen has led Tulgeen during our transition into the NDIS and she is a logical choice during Tulgeen’s continuing transition which demands organisational stability and cohesion.

Jen is warmly  welcomed into her new role by the Directors and the Senior team.

Recently the Kelly family left their historic farm Milford Acres to settle in Kalaru for health reasons.  This entailed a historic clearance sale.  In preparation for the sale, Greg Coman from Elders Tathra commissioned Tulgeen’s Bega Valley Workcrew to undertake the work to prepare the property and equipment for sale.

Denis and Els Kelly were so impressed by the quality of the work undertaken by Tulgeen’s Bega Valley Workcrew and underwhelmed by the invoice that they wanted to make an extra contribution to Tulgeen.

Today, led by Jarrod Palmer, Coordinator of the Bega Valley Workcrew, the entire team comprising Matt Adamson and Supported Employees Cornelius Moon, Josh Salter, Ryan Heyhorn and Lachlan Morris gathered to receive a $300 donation from the Kellys to Tulgeen in recognition of their excellent services.   Tulgeen has Deductible Gift Recipient Status so the Kellys will receive a tax deductible receipt for their donation.

“I’d recommend them to anyone” said Denis Kelly and Els Kelly chimed in by saying “it won’t be us again as I’m NEVER moving again.”

Auditors Sean Rixon and Peter Burton from bsi

Tulgeen Group welcomed auditors Peter Burton and Sean Rixon from bsi on site from 22 to 24 August as they undertook a three yearly re-certification Audit of Tulgeen’s Social and Disability Enterprises on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Social Services.

All four Social Enterprises – Stitches and Prints, Tulgeen Packaging Services, Bega Valley Workcrew and the Riverside Nursery as well as Tulgeen’s Governance and Management are reviewed to ensure that they meet the National Standards for Disability Services.  These are six national Standards which apply to Disability Service Providers and they ensure that Tulgeen’s Supported Employment workplaces offer consistency, quality and respectful environment for people with disability to work.  Each Standard is linked to Indicators of Practice which determine Tulgeen’s success in providing a good practice service.


The Indicators of practice provide guidance on the activities and ways of working that should be in place to support the standard. They describe what services need to do in order to meet each standard and what individuals, family and carers can expect. The National Standards for Disability Services Evidence Guide includes examples of evidence that services may use to assess whether and how they are meeting each standard.

The audit has concluded today and Peter Burton will publish his findings shortly.  Tulgeen has been advised that Re-certifcation has been passed with a Service Quality score of 9.6 out of 10.

Tulgeen welcomes fLinG Pysical Theatre

Today Tulgeen welcomed Rob McCredie, Co-Artitstic Director and Gabriela Green Olea, Associate Artist from Bega’s own fLinG Physical Theatre.  Rob and Gabriela joined Tulgeen staff Nathan Barry and Katrina Jones and participants, Jen, James, Meg, Annie and Nicholas  in a dance and movement session at INSYNC.

fLiNG Physical Theatre is a professionally supported youth dance company based in Bega. Since its’ founding in 2001 fLiNG has created many original performances and toured broadly to local venues, outdoor sites, schools as well as to theatres in Wollongong and Parramatta Sydney and in 2012 to Singapore  International Youth Festival. The mission of the company is to inspire people through original contemporary performance. To gain the skills required for this performance practice the company trains in dance, physical  theatre and gymnastics.

Tulgeen is currently exploring creative opportunities with fLinG in order to enrich and expand the cultural experiences available to our NDIS participants.

Tulgeen welcomes Yumaro Incorporated

Tulgeen was delighted to host a team from Yumaro Incorporated based in Moruya to our service today.  Yumaro was represented by their President, John Gillett OAM, Vice-President Greg Malavey and CEO, Mark Brantingham.  The visitors flew from Moruya to Frogs Hollow airfield courtesy of John Gillett who is an aviator and a long time volunteer with Angel Flight who work to transport remote and regional people to much needed medical care in major centres.

Yumaro is a leading provider of employment for people with a disability in the Eurobodalla and Shoalhaven regions. Established in 1984, it has gone from strength to strength over the years, most recently named the best  business in the Eurobodalla Shire, winning the Excellence in Business award at the Eurobodalla Business Awards on 12 August 2016.  Yumaro also won the Excellence in Accessibility Award.

John, Greg and Mark visited Tulgeen’s INSYNC, Respite Care, the four Social Enterprises – Tulgeen Packaging Services, Stitches and Prints, Bega Valley Work Crew and Riverside Nursery and did a drive by of Tulgeen’s residential complex, Maple Court, the Tulgeen Shopfront, Grevillea House  and Art in the Garage.  The visitors were most impressed with Tulgeen’s facilities and operations.

Tulgeen welcomes the exchange of information and ideas with other disability not for profits and intends to send a team to Yumaro in a return visit.  Sadly, we have no pilots and will have to stick to the highway…

Presented to Sherrie Fletcher, Coordinator of Stitches and Prints.  Sherrie was selected from a field of Good Practice Achievement Award winners for the Good Practice Leadership Award.  She was chosen for her strong and committed leadership in ensuring clients enjoy meaningful paid employment and in establishing Stitches and Prints as a financially sustainable Social Enterprise.

For a second year in a row, Tulgeen’s Studio INSYNC has created and entered a short film ‘Use It or Lose It’ in the Focus on Ability Short Film Festival.  ‘Use It or Lose It’ is directed by staff member Craig Beale, features original music sung by Denise Hossack and stars Tulgeen participants Jacinta Robinson, Cornelius Moon, Mitchell Porteous, Colleen Barrett, Wayne Ramus,  Graham Henkel, Bradley Gordon and Taylor Kearney.  Many other staff and clients also contributed to the creative and technical processes of the film.

The film is  a showcase of the talents of both staff and participants.  Above all, it celebrates the joy and delight of diversity and life.

Running for the 8th consecutive year the Focus on Ability Short Film Festival is run by NOVA Employment. The competition is aimed at raising awareness of the abilities of people with a disability. With over $100,000 worth of cash and prizes to be won this is a highly contested competition.

Films will be both judged by a professional judging panel and put through an online voting process, with separate prizes for each category.


In an effort to make ‘Use It or Lose It’ go viral, we are encouraging its sharing via all forms of social media.
